Health to Nature Connection

More and more practitioners are prescribing outdoor activity to improve both physical and emotional health.  You've probably experienced improvements in mood and focus after spending time outdoors.  Whether gardening, hiking, running or cycling outdoors time goes faster, your performance improves and there's a sense of relaxation and clarity.  Now research supports the positive outcomes of spending time outside with nature.  This represents a long history in the evolutionary process known as "adaptive synergy with nature."


Research supported improvements in adults when time is spent in nature:

  • Cardiovascular health
  • Immune responses
  • Pain tolerance
  • Sleep quality
  • Mood
  • Concentration
  • Performance

Furthermore, here some substantial research supported benefits in children - There were similar positive outcomes in children as shown in adults.  Additionally, notable benefits include reduced symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, prevention or reduced obesity, distance vision improvements and better vitamin D levels. Also, emotional health advantages; such as improved social bonding, reduced violence, learning stimulation and creativity.

Get Your Nature Fix

After hearing about these benefits, we should all strive to spend some time in nature and it doesn't take much effort. In fact, 20 minutes spent in a park setting is enough to elevate attention performance.  Living in an urban environment reduces our access or time spent in nature.  But there's good news, you don’t need to go far to find healing in nature, some of these benefits can be gained just by spending time in a local park.   While there's still more research to be done in order to tease out the advantages, we can all make an effort to spend some quality time outdoors.  I believe there's a give and take relationship that we have with nature.  Being outdoors connects us to our planet which encourages us to take better care it, when we do that our planet supports us by providing healthy air to breathe and nutrient-rich soil to grow healthy foods.  Spending time in nature saves the earth, which in turn saves us.

Don't Believe in Sunscreen Pills


You may have read or heard that taking antioxidants can protect your skin from the sun damage.  While some combinations of antioxidants may protect the skin from damage, it only provides small amount of protection.  Nothing works better than a good quality sunscreen and sun protective clothing.  However, even sunscreen has it's limits of protection.  Minimize your sun exposure even when you're wearing sunscreen.
