What's Trending for 2019

This new year the focus will continue to be on health and fitness.  As consumers have on-going concerns about health care coverage, the need for ways to be healthy and stay healthy are emphasized.  If you're like most people who are stressed and short on time, efficiency is a necessity.  We're anticipating more well-rounded approaches for meeting health goals.  Let's see what popular options for health are available without long time commitments and will support our emotional well-being too.

  • Supporting Local Farmers - Shopping at your local farmers' market supports local farming, plus it's better for the planet.  What's more, it can be a relaxing, enjoyable and connecting experience.  Advantageously, this is a way to avoid large scale farming with less likelihood for foodborne illnesses such as the salmonella scare with romaine lettuce.  When purchasing from the farmers' market, the produce is fresher, leading to more nutritious foods that lasts longer and contributes to fewer trips to the grocery store.

  • Improved Nutrition Facts Label - Even though these updated labels have a 2020 deadline, manufacturers are already changing their labels.  Look for easier to read label with more reasonable serving sizes, calories in larger type, a separate line for added sugars and the amounts of various nutrients are listed instead of just the percentages.

  • Informed Choices While Dining Out - Look for more nutrition information posted on menus at restaurants and fast-food places.  With new requirements for nutritional labeling on menus, this provide additional opportunities to make informed and healthier choices while dining out.

  • Quick and Healthy Prepared Meals at the Grocery Store - You may have noticed many more take-away options at the grocery store.  Rather than going to restaurants for healthier choices your grocery store may be the best deal financially and health-wise.  Some new additions in stores are burrito bars, and precooked meals that you can assemble yourself with a protein, vegetable and carbohydrate choice.  In more trendy stores you may find, build your own Buddha bowls with whole grains, vegetables and animal or vegetarian protein choices, a great way to get whole grains and lots of veggies.  Next time you're looking for a quick healthy meal check out your grocery store's deli section.

  • Better Support for Behavior Change - More and more people struggle with maintaining restrictive diets which eliminate nutritionally important food groups.  These diets tend to bring about emotional distress with feelings of guilt, depression and poor self-esteem from how difficult they are to sustain.  Support for changing to healthier behaviors that are sustainable are available with health coaching strategies for long-term change.

  • Managing Stress - Better management of cortisol or stress hormones can make a huge difference in weight loss and health outcomes.  Meditation and mindfulness will continue to be emphasized with promotion of new activities such as Forest bathing and green exercise for stress management and balancing hormones for improved results.

  • Exercise is Easier and Convenient - Fitness trackers make fine tuning your work-out easier.  Building more activity into your day by shopping and running errands with people power (walking or biking) makes for efficient use of time.  In other words, you’ll improve your fitness, produce less carbon emissions and save time by getting things done and exercising at the same time.  Additionally, you’ll be less stressed by avoiding traffic and not needing to search for parking.  Also popular are 30 minutes work-outs and 10 minutes bouts of exercise through-out the day.

Reduced Morning Carbs, Improved Weight

A recent study from Greece, introduced a reduced carbohydrate breakfast to a Mediterranean-type diet which led to improved weight and fat loss, and smaller waist size.  You might try to swap out your high carb breakfast for a higher protein, low fat meal if you're trying to lose weight.
