Prescription Drugs in Our Water

What’s a person to do! We need to watch out for E.coli in our spinach and beef. And now , it’s sex hormones, antibiotics and other prescription drugs in our water supply. Given it is trace amounts but what about the cumulative effect? We can’t trust bottled water and it’s environmentally incorrect to overwhelm our landfills with plastic bottles. This has sent me on long needed quest for the perfect water filter. It turned out more complicated than I expected. You need to decide which contaminates are most important to you to have filtered out. VOCs, TCEs, THMs and what to do about fluoride, and to be able to keep the beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium. Distilled water takes out all the minerals, NOT! We want to keep those good minerals in our water. I don’t need to worry about cysts and giardia in Seattle water (let’s hope not!). Reverse osmosis wastes water is slow and requires a small storage tank, not thrilled about that either. But it does remove a lot of contaminates. Also consider the disposal of all those replacement filters. I wouldn’t want to fill my landfill with those either. Long lasting filters would be decent option. NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certification of the filter is important too. So far that’s what I’ve discovered. I’ll keep you posted on my further investigations in finding the perfect water filter for my needs. Let me know what you think.
