Popeye would be sad
I was shopping in my local grocery store yesterday. As I was perusing the produce section, I felt a sense of sadness seeing the empty shelves where the mixed salad greens and spinach should be. It wasn’t so much the absence but the meaning of the absence. It occurs to me that this could happen with any food at any time. We live in a country of abundance with vast selections of food. This abundance and selection has not come without risk to our food supply.
Good nutrition is a about consuming a variety of foods. On the positive side (not to underscore the deaths and illnesses from E.coli), this pushes us to try other vegetables such as arugula, chard and kale. Never before have I noticed bagged arugula so prominent.
I’m thinking it’s time to start planting a winter garden of spinach and lettuce greens so I be certain about my own food supply of greens.
